The role:

Are you passionate about data? We are seeking a state traffic count engineer to join our team. In this role, you will serve as Oregon's expert for the programs within the Transportation Systems Monitoring Unit (TSM). You will also oversee the federally funded Oregon Traffic Monitoring Program. A day in the life:

  • Develop and administer ODOT Traffic Monitoring Program.

  • Develop statewide traffic counting processes, practices and schedules for field data collection and for traffic equipment purchases.

  • Lead and coordinate all field traffic counting activities for Region 1 and 2.

  • Coordinate statewide program activities and provide staff oversight.

  • Act as ODOT’s internal and external traffic monitoring expert.

  • Develop plans for future use of technology to improve the program, including permanent and portable traffic counting equipment utilizing specialized traffic engineering expertise.

  • Design and develop Oregon’s TMS to meet AASHTO and FHWA requirements.

  • Lead TSM Unit in program management, maintenance and operations of Oregon’s TMS.

  • Act as project manager for consultant contracts.

  • Work in an office environment. Hybrid work options available after training. Some travel throughout Oregon may be required.

Minimum qualifications:

A valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of traffic counting principles and FHWA Traffic Monitoring Guide.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of roadside data collection sensors and field data collection principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing tasks and projects.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate between customers and internal and external partners to gain consensus for new and revised business practices.
