Job Description

The Paralegal for the General Claims (GC) Legal department provides paralegal support to in-house staff attorneys for claims-based legal matters, assists attorneys’ legal research, and monitors case and publication alerts through Westlaw and public dockets on important cases, regulations or statutes.

The GC Legal Paralegal analyzes issues related to liens, child support judgments, and releases, and drafts correspondence, memoranda and pleadings under the close guidance of staff attorneys. The GC Legal Paralegal develops reports to aid General Claims leadership through the analysis and assembly of data provided from various sources, which reports are prepared and updated on a cadence managed independently by the paralegal. The GC Legal Paralegal also provides some support for subpoena responses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate in the production of various reports to aid the General Claims’ management of litigated matters; ensure data accuracy; assist with reporting on status of appellate matters; and update various legal support tools for General Claims Staff.

  • Serve as the General Claims Legal liaison to General Claims Staff regarding issues associated with medical liens and releases, including: reviewing ERISA plan documents to determine whether the plan is a self-funded plan that legally may enforce a lien for medical benefits, and provide a recommended conclusion to GC Legal Staff; responding to requests for multi-state child support judgment searches and reviewing releases for inconsistencies that may not protect insureds or NJM interests.

  • Engage in various inter-departmental tasks for General Claims Legal. Prepare memoranda for collections, support the Collections Department in recovering fraudulently obtained funds from NJM; track these matters with Collections every 60-90 days for status; and assist General Claims Legal Staff in organizing multi-claim SIU matters.

  • Provide paralegal support to nine attorneys including conducting legal research and circulating newly released court opinions on relevant issues; monitoring case and publication alerts through Westlaw on important cases, regulations or statutes; monitoring Google search reports on topics as requested; providing General Claims with current statutes regarding good-faith claims handling; and obtaining documents from state and federal dockets.

Required Qualifications:

  • Paralegal Certificate required

  • Proficiency in accurately organizing, analyzing and preparing documents and data

  • Strong ability to analyze documents for relevance and privilege

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required, ability to perform data analysis through Excel, is a plus

  • Ability to conduct, summarize and analyze investigative and/or legal research, excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong attention to detail and customer service, excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities efficiently, and ability to work both independently and in a group setting, with a strong desire to collaborate with and provide guidance to others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program is preferred.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and credentials.

Pay Range: $56,400-$65,437

Eligible full-time employees receive a competitive Total Rewards package, including but not limited to a 401(k) with employer match up to 8% and additional service-based contributions, Health, Dental, and Vision insurance, Life and Disability coverage, generous PTO, Paid Sick Leave, and paid parental leave in addition to state-mandated leave. Employees may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
