Job Description

This application is for a 12-week internship role from June - August 2025. Resume review begins in January 2025.

The Bioassays and High-Throughput Screening (BHTS) group is responsible for assay optimization efforts for either routine project support to monitor a material's (biologics or small molecules) effects on specific targets and pathways or execute in-house large-scale screening of our internal compound library for early program lead identification efforts.  This is largely accomplished using our automation systems and robotics platform.  This project will focus on a smaller collection of small molecules with screening for compounds' effects on a neurobiology target in a cell-based assay system based on a Nano-Luciferase Reporter platform.

The BHTS group is within the Biotherapeutic & Medicinal Sciences department.  The primary goal of BHTS is to support early drug discovery efforts across all the therapeutic indications that Biogen focuses on.  Our work informs the discovery pipeline and drives the earliest portions of Research and Discovery efforts at Biogen.

Position Description

  • Tissue culture techniques to support cell-based assays
  • Learn instrument use/management, QC of liquid handlers, and software for data analysis and interpretation of experimental results
  • Execute the day-to-day process of high throughput screening with significant use of our group's HighRes Robotics system
  • Complete a small library of compound screening with data reported to the database and delivered to the project team

Example projects may include:

  • Use of volume validation instruments to QC either/both of PRIME and Agilent Bravo liquid handlers. This includes creating a template to track the results and distribute to the group
  • Maintain cultures of human cells
  • Assay optimization efforts to support internal HTS execution
  • Learn software used to analyze large data sets and understand what statistical outcomes drive assay validation/robustness

Qualifications

  • Pipetting by hand with micro-pipettes, tissue culture experience a plus
  • Minimal experimental design and execution

To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university

Education

  • Currently matriculating undergraduate with a major in Biology/Biochemistry/Cell Biology/Biotechnology/Chemistry

Location

  • This role is on-site in Cambridge, MA
