Description:
Provides regulatory legal advice relating to the wholesale power business of NRG Energy, Inc. and its affiliates. This individual will be a team oriented regulatory focused attorney that will be a critical part of the legal team. The attorney will be capable of collaborating frequently with team members. This individual will ideally be highly versatile and self-motivated, capable of exercising sound legal and business judgement under time sensitive and fast paced conditions, to deliver a high quality and well-conceived work product that furthers the organization's business objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Independently provide counsel to clients on matters of regulatory law and policy
- Research, review, and interpret energy regulations and orders in order to implement regulatory strategies and achieve clients' business objectives; draft letters, memorandum, and pleadings in connection therewith
- Monitor developments and trends including changes in the law, administrative decisions, and judicial decisions in order to inform management and identify opportunities
- Conduct regulatory due diligence for transactions and development projects.
- Review interconnection agreements
- Review regulatory approvals/permits
- Obtain regulatory approvals for transactions - Federal/State/ISO
- FERC advocacy as necessary
- Counsel clients with respect to the design, operation, and regulation of wholesale markets and engage in stakeholder advocacy efforts at RTOs/ISOs
- Familiarity with FERC market-based rate, QF and EWG requirements
- Advise clients regarding regulatory aspects of project development including the provision of electric, gas and other utilities; legislative issues; and public relations
- Experience with investigations, Dodd Frank matters and/or general litigation is a plus

Working Conditions:
- The preferred location for this position is Princeton, New Jersey or Houston, Texas.
- Some travel may be required
Minimum Requirements:
- JD from an ABA accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in NJ, TX (or another state)
- Four (4) to eight (8) years of relevant legal experience
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Significant experience advising clients with respect to regulatory matters
- Ability to work independently and as a team member; ability to set priorities and to respond to changing demands from multiple sources
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) including project management skills; ability to negotiate; ability to provide a high level of client service and build consensus.
- Ability to interface with all levels of the organization
- Ability to take lead on any responsibilities within the job description
