Job Summary

The person in this position will clean and cook at assigned Interpersonal Violence Research Lab (IVRL) facilities located in or near Pine Ridge, SD, and in Rapid City, SD, as well as at community events and venues at schools and community centers on the Pine Ridge Reservation and in Rapid City.  This position is on an as-needed basis.  It is usually around 10 hours a week every week but is based on the number of meetings and events scheduled each week or month.  Cooking and cleaning before advisory board meetings, special events, and community feeds at alternative locations across the reservation, or when special visitors arrive is a priority for people filling this role.  Occasional weekends and evenings are required, but a minimum of 3 days advance notice will be given when work will occur outside of Monday through Friday, 8-5 business hours.   General cleaning including sweeping, mopping, dusting, washing bedding, cleaning bathrooms, making beds, and vacuuming, are just some, but not all of the duties you will be asked to do with this position.  Cooking and shopping could also be included with this position, as well as collaboration and frequent communication with other cook cleaners and IVRL staff as needed.  Weekly activity sheets are expected to be submitted as well as weekly time reports submitted on an electronic timesheet system called Firefly.

Responsibilities*

  • 50%  Cleaning before and after advisory board meetings, special events, and community feeds at assigned IVRL locations or alternative locations across the reservation.
  • 50%   Menu planning, shopping, cooking, and serving for advisory board meetings, special events, and community feeds at assigned IVRL locations or alternative locations across the reservation.
  • This position requires the team member stand and walk for a few hours at a time.  It requires the ability to lift and carry heavy groceries and prepared food weighing up to 50 pounds.  It requires bending, kneeling, stretching upward, climbing on, and using step ladders.  It requires fine motor dexterity to safely handle knives and cut vegetables.

    Required Qualifications*

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

    The person in this position must be consistently able to get to work and be there a minimum of 10 hours per week.  The person filling this role needs to be able to collaborate and communicate with other team members about cleaning and cooking planning and progress.  The person in this role needs to be able to use cleaning tools and chemicals as well as cooking and baking equipment such as roaster pans, and crock pots.  The person must be able to handle food safely and wear appropriate safety gear, i.e. gloves when preparing and serving food. The person in this role needs to be knowledgeable about Lakota meal traditions.

    Problem Solving/Decision Making

    They will receive supervision from the Administrative Coordinator, but the team member is expected to work independently at different locations without direct supervision. 

    Interactions

    Most of the job will be interacting with the IVRL team members, but sometimes will also include interaction with community members and stakeholders at advisory board meetings and/or community or school events on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

    Supervision Received

    Weekly group supervision and weekly 1-1 check in with the Administrative Coordinator.

    Supervision Exercised:  

    This person will be training other community liaisons.

    Other Requirements:

    Some High School. 

    Knowledge of Lakota meal traditions. 

    Desired Qualifications*

    Relevant experience, training or coursework in culinary studies, Indigenous studies, or related field. One year of cleaning or cooking experience is preferred. Knowledge of Lakota meal traditions.
