The Assistant Director, Student Engagement & Outreach reports to the Director, Student Engagement & Leadership and enhances the student experience by supporting extracurricular and co-curricular activities with a focus on hands-on leadership development. This role involves designing and implementing campus-wide programming that fosters community building, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, providing students with meaningful opportunities for growth and engagement.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Direct and promote high-profile campus events, including Week of Welcome, Back to Boylston, Late Night Breakfast, and others, ensuring these events contribute meaningfully to campus culture and student engagement.
  • Advise the Emerson Mane Events (EME) student programming board, supervise student staff, collaborate with campus departments, and manage the day-to-day function of the board
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate student employees who support student events and programming.
  • Collaborate with campus-wide program committees, including Orientation, Student Organization Fair, Family Weekend, Recruitment events, and other Student Affairs functions, to promote student engagement in extracurricular and co-curricular activities.
  • Develop and implement intentional branding and marketing strategies to promote the office's offerings and ensure effective communication of its resources and services to the student body.
  • Lead the creation of new initiatives and direct traditional programming to ensure alignment with institutional strategic goals, emphasizing community building, student engagement, retention, and personal development and supporting Emerson College’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in all programs.
  • Provide leadership and management of Student Engagement and Leadership (SEAL) events, overseeing event support, compliance, budgeting, development, and strategic execution, ensuring successful outcomes and vitality of the office’s programming.
  • Serve as an advisor to all Class Year Councils (First Year, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Councils), offering mentorship and support to student leaders as they plan and execute programs that foster class unity, leadership development, and community engagement.
  • Serve as a co-advisor to the Student Experience Senate in the Student Government Association, collaborating with the Director of Student Engagement to provide guidance, mentorship, and support for the Senate's initiatives, ensuring alignment with organization goals and enhancing student involvement.
  • Co-facilitate monthly diversity and social justice workshops and trainings for student leaders, aimed at fostering inclusivity and enhancing leadership skills, in collaboration with the Intercultural Office.
  • Develop and implement civic engagement initiatives, including voter education, registration drives, and civic participation events. Coordinate student-led community service and advocacy projects, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and community needs. Design workshops, trainings, and seminars to enhance students' civic knowledge, leadership skills, and community awareness.
  • Provide advising support for the Emerson Recognition and Achievement Awards (ERA)
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to perform the job effectively.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in college student personnel administration, higher education administration, or a related area required; Master’s Degree preferred
  • 2-3 years of professional experience with advising, program planning, event management, and contracting required.
  • 2-3 years of professional or graduate level experience within a higher education setting preferred.
  • Experiencing advising a programming board is preferred

  • Experience with student development and leadership training
  • Ability and experience working effectively with diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Understands social media uses (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

  • Requires the ability to lift and move light objects

  • Must be able to respond to campus emergencies and participate in the administrator on-call rotation.

WORK ENVIRONMENT – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • Work is performed in an office setting with regular interaction with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Occasional evening and weekend responsibilities to support the campus community are required.

Compensation: $57,250.00 - $70,200.00 annually, commensurate with experience.
